I know this isn’t the right place to post this…but here you go anyway: Punk music didn’t just drop out of the sky some glorious day in 1977, or 76, or whenever. There were bands doing “punk†music way before someone decided to market Mohawks, safety pins, and studded jackets. And the MC5 were one of them. They were also a hard rock band, a blues band, an “early heavy metal bandâ€, and a garage band. But “early†gargage music would be at least five years earlier. They arrived more at the brunt of the whole “garage thing.†The “early garage bands†predate the MC5, like the Sonics, (1960), the Kingsman (1957), the Trashmen (1962), and the Wailers (1957). But, this is bullshit hairsplitting. The MC5 formed in 64 and didn’t really get going till the late sixties. About the same time as the stooges. And the same city for that matter. And they both existed before the term punk was ever thought of. But the Stooges were considered punk and not the 5?!? Dumb. The MC5 didn’t fit any category, they railed against everybody and everything. Society, government, consumer culture, and on and on. And they made two and three cord music that was fast, furious, and sounded like a sonic blemish to all the trust fund hippy kids who where all peace and love and flowers and shit. The 5 were punk alright. Just ask the first punk bands who they listened to and and see who they site as influences. They were a helluva lot more “punk†than 90 percent bullshit skater punk bands out there today Post a comment
